Webinar: Milking in CCC Systems: Science and Practice

How does cow-calf contact affect the machine milking process? This webinar brings together researchers and practitioners to explore the science and practice of milking in CCC systems, from milk ejection physiology and stimulation, to robotic milking and real-world farm experiences, this webinar chaired by Kerstin Barth covers it all.

Speakers:

  • Sabine Ferneborg is an associate professor at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, with extensive experience of different aspects of robotic milking. In the last years, her research has focused on integrating CCC into automatic milking systems, with a focus on milking and management aspects for the cow.
  • Rupert Bruckmaier, Professor emeritus at the University of Bern, has spent decades researching the physiology and endocrinology of dairy cows and other ruminants, with special focus on oxytocin release and milk ejection.
  • Dr. Katharina Zipp is post doc and lecturer at the University of Kassel (Germany) in the section of Farm Animal Behaviour and Husbandry. During her doctor thesis she investigated different non-invasive approaches to improve the milk ejection in dam-calf contact systems. Further research topics concerned the influence of CCC on calf development, animal behaviour and foster cows’ health.
  • Julia Rell is a scientist at the Centre for Dam–Calf Contact Rearing in Switzerland. Her research addresses various aspects of dam–calf contact systems in dairy production, including milkability and the interaction between calf suckling and machine milking.
  • Kerstin Barth is a senior scientist at the Thünen Institute and has been conducting experiments on CCC systems, particularly on dam-calf contact systems, at the institute’s own experimental farm for many years. Her main interests lie in the practical implementation of cow-calf contact, stress-free weaning of calves, and the milkability of the dams.
